This Scotland hiking journey explores two regions of

Scotland – Wester Ross in the North West Highlands

and the Cairngorms National Park. These

contrasting areas offer some of the finest hiking in

Scotland, making this the perfect adventure for

those eager to explore the Highlands on foot.

Scotland Hiking Tour Overview

Our Scotland hiking tour will lead you on a journey through the Highlands, discovering Scotland’s rich wildlife and history as you hike through beautiful landscapes. We start in Wester Ross in the northwest Highlands, then move east for days exploring the wild corners of Cairngorms National Park, with its distinctive landscape of high plateaus and glaciated glens. We finish along Loch Ness in the central Highlands at the picturesque town of Fort Augustus. Along the way, we climb munros (Scottish mountains over 3000′), explore the summer isles by yacht, and enjoy a dram of whiskey at a local friends distillery. Adventurous days on the hill will be balanced by relaxing evenings in charming Highland hotels where the outstanding cuisine will leave you ready for the challenges of the next day. This is Scotland done as a Scot would do.

Itinerary at a glance

Days 1-2: Our hiking exploration of Scotland begins as we meet our guides and traveling companions in Inverness, known as the “gateway to the Highlands.” A beautiful drive brings us to Wester Ross and the northwest coast of Scotland where we make our home for two nights in the seaside village of Gairloch. From here we set out on scenic hikes through the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve and the hills above Loch Maree.

Days 3-5: A coastal drive brings us to the bustling fishing community of Ullapool from where we enjoy a stunning boat trip around the Summer Isles archipelago. We continue east to the charming village of Boat of Garten. Located along the River Spey, it is the perfect home for our journeys into the Cairngorms National Park where we hike through ancient Caledonian Pine forests and explore the high plateau of the main Cairngorms massif. Our hikes never finish far from one of the many whisky distilleries, where we can enjoy a private guided tour and a dram of Speyside malt whisky.

Days 6-7: Today leads us into the central Highlands region and our next accommodations in Fort Augustus, located on banks of Loch Ness. Close to Loch Ness is one of Scotland’s most beautiful valleys – Glen Affric. The glen is cloaked in Scots Pines and Loch Affric is surrounded by beautiful peaks which offer wonderful hiking opportunities. There are options to climb high up one of the many peaks, or stay low and hike along one of the scenic lochs.

Day 8: We return to Inverness for departure or further independent journeys.
